Barn Owl Nesting Box Plan

Looking for a cost-free ally in your battle to control rodents? Meet the barn owl, a stealthy predator found anywhere in the U.S. The barn owl's hearing is so sharp that it hunts mice by listening for them as they move through their runways beneath the grass. A family of 2 adults and 6 young consume 1,000 rodents during their 3-month nesting period.

The barn owl is 15 to 20 inches tall, with a huge wingspan up to four feet wide. But because of its wing design, it flies without making noise. It has a white, heart-shaped facial disk, no ear tufts and long legs. Covered with black specks, it is white from below and brown from above.

Barn owl numbers are falling—they are protected in some states—due to lost habitat and declining rodent populations.

You can help. Simple nesting boxes work to build barn owl populations. We judge best this nesting box. It takes a half-day to build. Mounted 12-feet high to the inside wall of a barn, the owl enters the box through a hole cut into the building side.
