Planter's Retreat, Our Fourth Idea Home and Farmstead

By Dan Miller

It's that time of the year again. We are deep into construction of our 2006 Idea House and Farmstead, the fourth home and farmstead in our series. This year we welcome you to visit the best in country living at Planter's Retreat, our 3,200-square-foot home and acreage at WhiteFence Farms at Red Hills.

The Progressive Farmer turns 120 this year. We can't think of a better place to celebrate our longtime friendship with you than out here on these rolling acres of the Florida Panhandle. It's a beautiful piece of property. Most prominently is the 3-acre pond lined with magnificent, thick live oaks; lengths of Spanish moss hang from the branches.

You'll find WhiteFence Farms 15 minutes outside Tallahassee, Fla. It's a world away from the crowd of the city and sprawl of the suburbs. This is a place connected to the land. It's a place for living where you don't have to make a living from the soil. It represents a simpler notion of land and a deep tradition of land ownership that still powers America.

The home and farmstead overflow with ideas.

Here's one: We are launching a new feature this year. It's a custom-designed workshop. Cabinets and work surfaces will be mounted on wheels. The portability gives you the flexibility to customize your workshop area to fit your needs.

Our home at WhiteFence Farms is unique. A dogtrot-style structure, the middle section of the home is open to the outside. A second-floor, enclosed bridge connects the residential halves on either side of the open entryway. The home is four bedrooms.

As does every home by The Progressive Farmer, this one includes a family-sized kitchen. The kitchen is designed for hearty mealsÑfor fried eggs with biscuits and gravy, roast beef with mash potatoes and fresh asparagus, homemade apple pie and a batch of hand-turned ice cream.

There is a pantry for bulk storage. The large wraparound porch allows you to expand your view of the outside, to the outside. There is a mudroom designed for the dirt and mud of real country living. The home also includes an office for family matters or a home business. Look for us to bring you more on this special space.

We know all these features are important to your life in the country. You will always find them in our homes.

The property includes a horse stable with three stalls—one for a wash area—and another space for a tack room. We're also designing a pond porch. Set down by the pond, this is a covered, partially screened structure. Only a short walk from the house, it is perfect for picnics with the family and friends.

The Progressive Farmer Idea House and Farmstead is being built jointly this year with our sister magazine, Southern Living. Southern Living was born from The Progressive Farmer 40 years ago, and we welcome them back into the place you and we love. The developer of this project is The St. Joe Company.

The home and farm opens for you on June 10, 2006. Visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. The open house ends October 1.

Admission is $5. The proceeds are being donated to the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Auxiliary.

We invite you to visit and to take a few ideas back to your own home in the country.
