Those gosh-darned heifers broke a run of barbed wireagain. Here's a two-minute
fix from Quality Farm Fencing, owned and operated by our fencing experts, Gene
and Alicia Hamman of Danville, Ala. Gene demonstrates a simple but strong splice. First, he
removes staples from a couple of posts in each direction. Then he uses a fence
stretcher to pull enough wire together so that the ends overlap (right image).
1. Separate the two strands of the broken wire on each side until you reach the
first barbs.
2. Bring the two wires together, laying them side by side. The two barbs should
be next to each other.
3. Wrap a left-side wire in a counterclockwise direction three times over the
right-side wires.
4. Wrap the second wire over the top of the tail of the first wire in a
clockwise motion, also three times.
5. Clip off the tail ends of the two wires wrapped over the right side of the
splice.
6. Follow steps 3 through 5, wrapping wires from the right side over the left
side.
