"This beautiful 100' x 60' split fieldstone barn was built in 1903 in the Town of Chase, Oconto Cty, Wisconsin. This type of stone barn is extremely rare. It's walls are built entirely out of fieldstone and lime putty mortar and are over 2 feet thick. Many of the stones are over 2 billion years old! They were picked from local fields, however their origin was Canada. They were pushed and tumbled here by massive Canadian glaciers during three known ice ages that passed through Wisconsin over the past 70,000 years. These glacier's buried these stones deep below the surface as they moved along, carving out much of Wisconsin's landscape as they traveled along. Every spring when the ground thaws, these stone would work their way up through the surface of freshly plowed fields. Farmer's often had to pick their "stone crop" before they could plant their other crop." Photo: Kristin Kolkowski"
