Dan came to be Farmstead Editor after 15 years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he was Progressive Farmer's Midwest Editor. Moving to the South and to headquarters in Birmingham, he now coordinates editorial for the Idea House and Farmstead and the Ultimate Workspaces programs. He also leads the farmstead editorial planning team.

Dan has been writing for more than two decades—most with Progressive Farmer. He has been honored with numerous writing awards, including two Oscars in Agriculture and Writer of the Year, a distinction given by the American Agricultural Editor's Association.

After high school, Dan spent three years in the Army. He later earned a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University, in DeKalb, IL. Before Progressive Farmer, he worked as a police, fire, courts and government writer for the Dixon (IL) Evening News. Later at the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette, he helped organize and wrote for the Iowa Farmer Today, a weekly farm newspaper.

Dan is married and living in Chelsea, AL with three children, teenage sons Aaron and Alex, and daughter, Sydney.
