ask the mechanic

The oil light on my tractor flickers after the engine warms up and I idle the tractor down. When I rev up the engine, it stays out. Should I worry about this?

Red light means stop! Low oil pressure will destroy your engine, causing catastrophic failure that will require a new engine or a complete rebuild. But, you could have an electrical problem (usually the sending unit), not an oil pressure problem. Let's check it out.

Go to an auto store and purchase a manual oil gauge. It will come with the right fittings for your tractor. Remove the oil-sending unit and install the manual gauge. Check the engine oil pressure as the engine is warming up. If it stays in the range of your engine specs, you probably have a defective sending unit. If your oil pressure does, in fact, drop below specs, then you need to find out the cause of the problem before your engine crashes. You could have a worn oil pump or engine part, allowing oil pressure to drop. Make sure your engine has the proper viscosity (weight) of oil in it for the outside air temperature.
